Some rpms can be built from source packages.

  • rhel8 assumes that the codeready-builder is installed (though I got away without doing so for shorewall rpms build):
 subscription-manager repos --enable "codeready-builder-for-rhel-8-$(arch)-rpms"
  • Install the rpm development environment
yum install yum-utils rpm-build
  • install the EPEL repos
yum -y install https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/epel-release-latest-8.noarch.rpm

yum update
  • some packages may depend on power tools
dnf config-manager --set-enabled powertools

shorewall references

Execute this following as root to prepare and build shorewall from src rpm:

  • check if available
yum list avail shorewall

xfce4

Problems: redhat 8.1 seems to have communication problems, to both cdn and to Centos 8 mirrors. I have set my timeout to 240 seconds and I often have to restart yum install or equivalent commands.

Install a Centos AppStream repository (note it may be leading redhat 8.X) so might be unstable vi /etc/yumrepos.d/centos.repo
