Lesson:Noobs
Noobs lessons
We are test driving with the Noobs card image that came with the raspberry pi[1] kit.
Aims:
- assemble a raspberry pi system and install the operating system
- configure the operating system
- set the pi to work
Outcomes:
- familiarise with construction of a pi
- successful boot of the pi
1. introduction

2020-08-03 This lesson was an introduction where Tom was presented with the raspberry pi 4 kit. We looked at the parts and the mediawiki layout. More to do with the mediawiki later.
The Noobs sdcard was backed up via lesson:backup sdcard. It is an important configuration control to backup your card image so you can restore the card should anything go wrong. It is easy to corrupt or damage the sdcard and you will be stuck if it is your only image.
It may take a while to backup depending on the speed of the card and the computer, but it may save you hours of work[2].
The kit came with a Noobs pre-installed Operating System on an sdcard[3]. This is not a good choice for a starting operating and the raspberry pi foundation have discontinued its support. Note that user:ralph was not able to extend the partition (found out that it is MBR[4] formatted with extended partitions - a Microsoft Windows problem - Linux uses GPT[5].
2. assembly
Be careful with all the small connectors; it is very easy to damage the sockets. The power connector is reversible, but the mini-HDMI are not. Ensure that the power point is off when plugging in the raspberry pi. Plug in the HDMI, and any USB connectors before turning the pi power supply on.

.

2022-08-05 This lesson involved working out where the heat-sink tape was to be placed on the SBC components and the assembly of the board sandwiched inside the heat-sink, then the wiring of the SBC and insertion of the sdcard, and then configuring the Operating System.
There is something wrong with the card image and it was not able to update all its files. We tried a copy of the card using a faster class A1 card and the result was the same, but the new card is noticeably faster to update.
Again we learned about:
- root user (sudo su -)
- apt (cd /etc/apt)
apt update apt upgrade
Again it failed to update.
Here is the movie of the first desktop installing
We discussed that maybe an ethernet lead should be made so computers can be plugged directly into the router.
Note: the Noobs sdcard image wasted all the sdcard remaining space, and user:ralph was unable to extend the partitioning. It was discovered on subsequent analysis that it was using MBR/LBA formats and they were not supported on the gparted Debian 11 images. On further research it was found that the Debian organisation has dropped Noobs. Noobs in unsupported and has been replaced by the raspi-imager and its selection of operating systems. Thus there are another stream of lessons starting out again where we download the images we want.
